Commonly asked questions about BEE verification
| Why does my company need to go through the BEE Verification process? |
In South Africa today, a BEE verification certificate is a serious business tool. It provides recognition of your BEE status and, therefore, provides greater credibility across the broader South African business landscape. It’s also an aid to convenience as it saves you from submitting proof of BEE every time you need to tender.

| Is there any other way to prove my business is BEE compliant? |
You could go through the process of supplying proof of your BEE status each and every time you respond to a tender. However, apart from the considerable amount of time this takes, many potential customers will only accept a valid B-BBEE verification certificate as proof of your status. In reality, the only way you can effectively prove your Black Economic Empowerment status is through a verification certificate.

| How can I gauge what work is involved in becoming BEE compliant? |
This will depend on the size and nature of your business. For example, if your turnover is less than R35m but greater than R5m you only have to comply with four of the seven elements on the Scorecard but this could be dependent on the type of business.

| Is it possible that my business could be exempt from BEE compliance? |
If your turnover is less than R5m you can apply to be exempt. In this case, as a micro enterprise, you would qualify with a BEE rating as a Level Four Contributor.
